Abstract

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a critical public health problem linked to overnutrition and inadequate dietary habits. Objective: To evaluate the effects of a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) on biochemical control in adults with T2D. Method: An explanatory, quasi-experimental, longitudinal study was conducted in 76 patients at Dr. Napoleón Dávila Córdova Hospital (Ecuador). A LCD (130 g/day) was implemented for 12 weeks, and biochemical parameters were evaluated at three time points. Results: A significant reduction (p < 0.05) was recorded in fasting glucose from 187.6 to 176.0 mg/dL and in HbA1c from 7.9% to 7.7%. Conclusion: The LCD is an effective therapeutic strategy for improving metabolic control and lipid profile in patients with T2D.
